Main duties of the job

The Clinical Governance & Quality Injuries Lead will take charge of driving quality and safety across our urgent treatment centres. In this dynamic role, they will:

  • Provide clinical leadership and supervision for our minor injuries clinicians, ensuring robust induction processes, continuous professional development, and expert mentoring.
  • Champion quality improvement by spearheading clinical audits, monitoring performance, and implementing strategies to exceed CQC standards.
  • Work closely with clinical services managers and external partners to develop and refine care pathways, ensuring every patient receives safe, efficient, and compassionate care.
  • Maintain their clinical expertise by practicing independently conducting assessments, making diagnoses, interpreting x-rays, and managing treatment plans in line with best practice.
  • Promote a Just Culture that values learning from feedback, ensuring concerns, complaints, and incidents are addressed proactively.

Job description

Job Title: Clinical Governance & Quality Injuries Lead

Team: Clinical Governance Team

Base Location: Lexicon House, Leeds

Line Manager: Director of Clinical Governance & Quality

Hours of Work: 16 hrs per week (Flexible working) PLUS additional contracted clinical shift can be offered in LCD Urgent Treatment Centre

Staff Group: All Clinical & Dental Triage Nurses

DBS Check Level Required: Enhanced with Child/Adult Barring due to providing care

Vaccination Requirement Statement:

  • Covid19 double vaccination not required but recommended.
  • This job has been rated as Medium Risk for requiring Hepatitis B immunisation vaccination is recommended, therefore Post Holders will be offered a Hep B immunisation.
  • Flu jab recommended and will be offered.

Accountabilities: Supervision, leadership and development of the UTC workforce (non-GP) working in Wharfedale UTC and St Georges UTC through PDRs and auditing. Overseeing concerns, complaints, compliments and claims data.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Supervision

  1. The postholder will be the clinical supervisor for practitioners working in Wharfedale and St Georges UTC. Clinical supervision will include:
  2. Induction for minor injuries clinicians and completion of probationary reviews.
  3. Supporting the PDR process for minor injuries clinicians (that supports revalidation process or personal development need, including implementing learning from audit or incident).
  4. Ensure staff have appropriate Continuing Professional Development and to support the wider education agenda of the organisation in liaison with the Clinical Governance and Quality team.
  5. Undertake clinical audit and participate in the clinical audit meetings (for injuries clinicians).
  6. Support the organisation to achieve CQC standards.
  7. Working closely with the clinical services manager and Director of clinical governance and quality to collate a response to learning identified through quality monitoring processes.
  8. Support clinical services manager in team meetings and make suggestions on ways to improve and enhance the teams quality and performance.

Clinical Practice

  1. Practice, without direct supervision as an independent healthcare practitioner within a UTC.
  2. Undertake assessment, diagnosis, treatment/referral and discharge of patients with undifferentiated minor injuries and minor ailments.
  3. Carry out x-ray interpretation of adult and paediatric limb x-rays to aid diagnosis of musculoskeletal injuries.
  4. Work within parameters of current independent prescribing legislation or approved Patient Group Directives.

Clinical Governance & Quality

  1. Responsibility for ensuring clinical governance standards are maintained in accordance with company policy and protocols.
  2. Liaise with the Clinical Governance and Quality team regarding quality issues.
  3. Support the clinical services manager to work with system partners and other local health providers to implement new care pathways and promote service development.
  4. Maintain a programme of clinical audit within the managed services in accordance with Clinical Governance and Quality audit standards, including meeting attendance.
  5. To ensure Just Culture is applied in the review of complaints and incidents and action plans are developed and implemented where clinical services have not met required standards.
  6. Responsible for escalating concerns with clinicians that are not meeting probation, quality or performance standards agreed with the Director of Clinical Governance and Quality.
  7. Support recruitment and ensure staff have the appropriate qualifications and have completed relevant checks prior to employment.

COMMUNICATIONS & RELATIONSHIPS

  • To ensure agreed lines of communication and reporting are implemented within the team to support all employees understanding LCD business plans, objectives, priorities and changes.
  • To promote effective cross-functional working and that the operational team supports the achievement of objectives, standards and protocols of other LCD areas.
  • To attend internal and external meetings representing LCD and engaging in discussions appropriate to the role and level of the post.

PATIENT CARE

  • To ensure that the quality of patient care is firmly at the centre of the organisations objectives and vision.
  • To ensure the management and monitoring of the highest standards or safety and quality in the delivery of healthcare and related services, and manage risk within Local Care Direct.

FINANCIAL RESOURCES

  • To ensure financial policies and procedures are maintained and the budget is adhered to and that best value for money is achieved.

CONFIDENTIALITY

  • To operate and ensure the team operates within information governance protocols and that business confidentiality is maintained at all times.

TRAINING

  • To complete the defined company induction programme and core training for this role and mandatory refresher training thereafter and ensure that accurate records of training are maintained.

INFECTION PREVENTION AND CONTROL

  • Healthcare workers have a duty of care to patients and are expected to comply fully with the companies Infection Prevention and Control (IP&C) policies and attend/complete IP&C training, for personal and patient safety and for prevention of healthcare-associated infection (HCAI). Knowledge, skills and behaviour in the workplace should reflect this.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • NMC Registered General Nurse/HCPC or IHCD Paramedic qualification/BSc in Paramedic studies.
  • Minor injuries qualification minimum level 6.
  • X ray interpretation qualification.
  • Valid current driving licence.

Desirable

  • Independent prescriber qualification.
  • Minor illness qualification minimum level 6.

Experience

Essential

  • Minimum 2 years clinical experience in minor injuries practice.
  • Minimum 2 years X-ray interpretation experience in minor injuries.
  • Supporting and supervising learners in practice.

Desirable

  • Experience of working with PGDs.
  • Clinical experience in minor illness practice.
  • Improving patient safety and experience.

Knowledge

Essential

  • Same day urgent and emergency care services.

Desirable

  • Understanding key performance indicators relating to urgent treatment centres.
  • Relevant IT systems.
